Nathan has cultivated a rich and diverse career spanning decades, encompassing experiences across the globe.
Throughout his career journey, Nathan has held faculty positions, contributing his expertise as a Senior Lecturer of Guitar at the University Teknologi MARA in Malaysia, as well as a Visiting Assistant Professor and Post-Doctoral Fellow at the American University in Cairo. He also held a Visiting Professor at the National Conservatory in Cairo, Egypt, and maintained adjunct positions at institutions such as Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia, the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, and SUNY Fredonia in Upstate New York. In recognition of his outstanding commitment to student development, he received the UiTM Innovation Teaching Award in 2014.
Nathan’s performances have captivated audiences across five continents, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. He champions the exploration and performance of contemporary works and enjoys collaborating with a host of talented composers from around the world.
As an accomplished researcher, Nathan has secured grants from the Howard Hanson Institute of New Music and the Fromm Foundation at Harvard and was awarded a U.S. Fulbright Scholar grant. Recently, he was co-researcher for the Bestari Perdana grant titled “The Malaysian Art Song as a Unifying and Empowering Cultural Identity.” His scholarly pursuits have taken him to various corners of the world, including immersive studies of Antonio Lauro with Luis Zea in Caracas, Venezuela, presentations on Tazul Tajuddin in Istanbul, Turkey, and on John Duarte at the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts in Perth. Nathan has published with the Malaysian Music Journal, International Journal of Innovation, Creativity, and Change, Doberman-Y’ppan, Azahar Press, Frameworks Records, and Soundset Records.
In service to the Twisted Spruce Music Foundation, Nathan spearheads the incubation of emerging composers and guitarists, providing them with a platform to thrive and grow.
Nathan’s academic background includes the a DMA and MM from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied under Nicholas Goluses. He further honed his craft at the Accademia di Musicale Chigiani in Siena, Italy, receiving guidance from the renowned Oscar Ghiglia. He earning a BM from George Mason University with Larry Snitzler. This all culminating in the prestigious Andrés Segovia Award for Musical Accomplishment and Human Endeavor upon graduating from Eastman in 2004.
